I feel like I have too many balls in the air at the moment, and as a result I’ve been feeling a bit frazzled. Long days at work have made my shoulders quite tense and sore, and late nights mean that I’m a bit behind on sleep too which hasn’t helped matters… With all that on my mind it was such a treat to receive these goodies from Aromatic Apothecary.

The Products the Focus on Stress Relief:

Each product is specifically formulated to target the areas that you need help in. I received the Stress Relief Trio including the Roll on Relief, Rub in Relief and Spray on Relief. And then to round it off, I also tried the Relaxer.

Aromatic 2The Roll on Relief is perfect for me because I haven’t quite been able to convince my man that he is obligated to provide shoulder massages on a daily basis. The Roll On Relief is the best product for self-massage and works well to penetrate deep into the muscles. It massages and applies the therapeutic essential oils at the same time. It’s packed full of essential oils in a gel base, including Ginger, Rosemary, Peppermint and Lavender. Ideal for relief from sports injuries, arthritic pains, bruises and stiff muscles and joints.

The Rub in Relief works well for Best for knees and joints, this is an absorbent and therapeutic muscle and joint cream. I’ve recently started running again and so inevitable the aches and pains are somewhat mitigated by using the Rub in Relief after a hot shower. It contains Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Cajeput and Menthol making it ideal for painful joint and muscular conditions.

The Spray on Relief is very convenient, and you don’t even have to get it on your hands when you apply it! Similar to the Roll on Relief, it contains Ginger, Rosemary, Peppermint and Lavender. But the addition of Menthol makes it feel amazing because it instantly cools the area, before the joint or muscles are warmed up by the Ginger and Rosemary.  The convenient spray-on application works for quick relief of painful muscles, spasms and sore joints.

Aromatic 1The last product I tried was the Relaxer, I love that this product includes Jojoba and Almond oils. My neck is generally incredibly tense so I’ve taken to rolling it on my muscles every couple of hours. It smells amazing too!

Visit their website here: www.Aromatic.co.za, or you can try their products for yourself at their kiosk on the ground level (between Woolies and Willoughby’s) at the Waterfront.

* I was given products to try out, all views are my own.

Last week I tried out the new, very interesting, Endermolift being offered by Legs11. It’s a Liftmassage using completely natural techniques to re-densify and rejuvenate your skin. It works to stimulate collagen production which decreases visible signs of aging such as lines, wrinkles and dark circles. And I’m hooked – I love that it’s a proactive, natural, non-invasive step that you can take to minimise those annoying fine lines and wrinkles. And, after just one session, it makes a big difference to how your skin feels because it also resurfaces your skin.

endo-face-mailler-900x300

I LOVE IT!

My therapist explained it to me as a ‘skin fitness workout’, it’s natural, no injections and no surgery and leaves your skin feeling amazing. It’s a machine that gently massages your skin and what I found after just one session is that it worked really well to recontour my skin, especially my décolleté where my skin was feeling quite rough. If you are looking for anti-aging results a longer term commitment works best, and after 2 months you can see some impressive results.  If you want to learn a bit more about how it works, visit www.liftmassage.com and then book your appointment at www.legs11.co.za!

If you have questions about the Endermolift technique, Legs 11 has created a great resource on their website: http://www.legs11.co.za/endermologie/endermolift/faq-s

I’m really excited to announce that Cape Town Insider is partnering with Spoilt Hair, I’m their newest brand ambassador and, after a month of perfect hair, their number 1 fan! It’s been a fun month meeting with the stylists, chatting about what I’m wanting to do with my hair and learning more about Spoilt’s passion for helping their customers look their best.

Spoilt HairOne of the things that I think most women love is being pampered. For me, going to the hair salon is my favourite way to relax and be spoilt. In the past I’ve found it quite stressful trying new stylists and often feeling like the stylist didn’t listen or care about what I wanted.

I love Spoilt, there is a positive feel at the salon, and the people that work there are always friendly. I’m really looking forward to more great hair days!

I have a strong preference for locally made products and with that in mind, I’ve got a couple of posts coming out this month that focus on local producers making beautifully crafted skin care products. The first of these is Rain, one of my perennial local favourites.

I received products from their “Bee Essential Remedies” range that harnesses the active properties of honey that have been associated with beauty and skincare for thousands of years.

Bee Essentials Body Lotion

Bee Essentials Body Lotion

Rain’s Bee Essentials range harnesses the active properties of honey as well as propolis and beeswax. Honey is packed full of good things including vitamins B and C as well as a range of essential minerals. Moisturising beeswax forms the base of most of the products in the range and propolis has powerful antimicrobial and antibacterial properties.

The Bee Essential Remedies Royal Jelly & Honey Body Lotion is my favourite of the products I tried, containing Royal Jelly it is nutrient rich (containing 134 nutrients including essential amino acids, minerals and vitamins). As a result it’s fantastic for anti-ageing and is a luxurious moisturising lotion.

Bee Essential Remedies Honey Scrub

Bee Essential Remedies Honey Scrub

I tried the Bee Essential Remedies Honey Scrub, it has a nice coarse grain that is very effective at removing dry skin (the bane of my winter existence) and smells incredible. It’s made from Sweet Almond Oil, Honey and Honey Bush, these ingredients work together to create a product that is leaves skin feeling smooth as well as offering wound healing properties as well as being anti-fungal and antimicrobial.

Bee Essentials Lip Therapy

Bee Essentials Lip Therapy

The Bee Essential Remedies Lip Therapy is a great investment, it’s thick and moisturising and you only need to spread the tiniest amount on your lips. I liked that the smell is quite neutral. To make the lip therapy Rain have used natural moisturisers including Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Evening Primrose Oil, Calendula Oil and Honey.

Bee Essentials Sleep Balm

Bee Essentials Sleep Balm

The last product I tried was very interesting, the Bee Essential Remedies Sleep Balm is applied to your pulse points before bed. It contains a variety of ingredients known to promote sleep including valerian, hops and lavender oil. It smells fantastic and my husband, a notoriously bad sleeper, has loves using it and it definitely makes him calmer!

I love this range, next time you’re in a Rain store, do yourself a favour and test it for yourself!

This weekend was a series of highlights – putting the new Chevrolet Trailblazer through it’s paces, skiing at South Africa’s only ski resort, an introduction to fly fishing and fabulous hospitality courtesy of the Chevrolet team.

 trailblazer-experience-146_880x500

trailblazer-experience-306_880x500

Friday was an early start, red-eye to East London, a quick breakfast and then we were off! Cruising in the new Trailblazer across the country, it was a long drive to Tiffindell but with good company and some stunning scenery the trip passed very quickly.

Saturday morning was a stunner: fresh and sunny – perfect weather for learning to ski – and we got some good laughs!

trailblazer-experience-237_880x500In the afternoon it was down to the dam to try our hand at fly fishing. Hard to say whether the lack of technique was responsible for the lack of fish caught, at least we weren’t relying on the fishermen for dinner.

 trailblazer-experience-344_880x500

And then all too soon the adventure was over, we jumped back in the Trailblazers to head to Bloemfontein before catching our flights home. It was a good opportunity to drive the SUV on the open road and I was really impressed with the big car’s road handling and efficiency (on tarred roads it was around 9l/100).

The Trailblazer is a really good family car, it’s got the extra two seats in the boot that make it a comfortable 7 seater, there’s loads of room for passengers in the back seats (enough even for my 6’4 husband) and it offers an incredibly smooth, comfortable ride. It has all the essential bells and whistles including a USB port, Bluetooth and cruise control. On the open road it was quiet and easy to drive and it handled the gravel roads up to the resort easily.

Thanks Chevrolet for an epic weekend away!

Joan MadibengSouth Africa celebrates twenty years of democracy this year. As we move forward and strive to shine light on our dark past, former Miss South Africa Joan Madibeng honours the fundamental role that women have played in the struggle for a free and democratic land.

“For me this is all about how to love, inspire and make a difference” she exclaims. “We are celebrating 20 years of empowerment and remembering milestones of a progressive journey.”
An acclaimed business woman in her own right, Joan has built a high profile career in marketing and corporate communications, based on a simple philosophy that reaching any dream and achieving any goal is possible.

In light of her annual Women’s Day conference: ‘Women, the Real Architects of Society’ Joan shared with us her 20 most inspirational female icons.

She begins by looking no further than the beautiful, strong yet softly spoken woman she is blessed to call her mom – Olga Ramagoshi. “She is a phenomenal woman” Joan explains, “She has made lots of sacrifices for us all. She is courageous, kind, giving and beautiful, both inside and out, and she reminds me all the time to remain grounded and to always have respect for others.”

Drawing further inspiration from her family, Joan praises her mother in law Sophie Madibeng. “She is always encouraging, positive and strong, and like my mother, she is woman of God. We have a special relationship, and I have learnt so much from her. Both my moms are my pillars of strength.”

During her successful career, Joan has encountered many accomplished women who have inspired her to work harder and grow as an individual. During her tenure as marketing manager at Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, Joan worked closely with Precious Moloi Motsepe, whom she admires for her work ethics, diligence and professionalism. “She makes time for people and carries herself with grace and elegance while remaining so humble.” Joan says, adding that it is Precious’s belief in empowering and nurturing others that Joan truly admires.

Joan views world-renowned jewellery designer Jenna Clifford as a strong, amazing, influential woman. She is outspoken on the issue of women’s rights and equality and is active in promoting women in business and has established several philanthropic projects. “Her life is a good example of how far we have come as women, the struggles we went through and are still experiencing.”

Personal friend and inspiration, Thami Ngubeni is next on Joan’s list. “She is a great listener, has big dreams and ensures that she works hard so that she can achieve those dreams. She is genuine and compassionate, radiating both an inner and outer beauty.”

Fellow successful businesswoman Khanyi Dlomo is cited by Joan as strong and level headed, a doer. “She is an eloquent dreamer who makes a difference in the lives of women and youth.”

Connie Ferguson is another female icon Joan sees as exerting a positive influence on our youth. Sophisticated yet genuine and humble, Joan admires Connie for continuously making a difference in the lives of many young women today.

Whilst Joan has clearly been motivated by many of her fellow South Africans, she also takes the opportunity to recognise some international iconic women who have inspired her, starting with Oprah Winfrey and Maya Angelou.

Speaking about Oprah Winfrey Joan says, “I love her generosity. She is a great example of hard work paying off and is always so grounded. She inspires me to work hard, give back and keep my feet on the ground.”

Like Oprah, Joan recognizes Maya Angelou as a great influence in her life. “She used her wisdom to change lives through her powerful and inspirational words, and I loved that about her.”

Michelle Obama and Jada Pinkett Smith were also on Joan’s list of iconic women. Joan respects the First Lady’s strength, boldness and grace, and values how she uses her power to stand up for women and children’s rights. “She continues to inspire me to have balance between my career and my family,” says Joan, “You can tell her daughters come first and I really admire that.”

Similarly, Joan is inspired by Jada Pinkett Smith, whom she says is famous, yet manages to keep a low profile. “She is such a beautiful mother,” says Joan, “And she reminds me that when you are a mom, it’s important to take care of yourself and still look healthy and good.”

Felicia Mabuza Shuttle, the first black woman to have her own successful television show is another of Joan Madibeng’s icons. Joan says that as a groundbreaker, Felicia is a reminder to all South African women that anything is possible in life as long as you believe in your dreams.

Joan recognises Epainette Mbeki as a strong and brave woman with a heart of gold, whose courage had a great impact on our country; as well as Dr Joyce Banda, another brave, assertive woman who is a great leader. “She commands respect as soon as she enters the room.”

Phuti Mahanyele, Wendy Luhabe, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, Dr Bregalia Bam, Vuyo Mahlati and Zanele Mbeki complete Joan’s list of her 20 female icons, as they all inspire her on different levels. “They all have a positive influence on my life, whether they are aware of it or not.” They are strong, educated, sophisticated and graceful visionaries whom Joan personally celebrates as architects of society.

These 20 women are Joan Madibeng’s personal icons, and they inspired ‘Women, the Real Architects of Society.’ They continue to influence Joan’s life, and she concludes her list by saying, “Today, for the rest of August and for every day of my life, I salute them all.”

Women, the Real Architects of Society, is the 4th event of its kind, providing a platform for creative discussion and networking amongst South African women, whilst celebrating female empowerment. It is set to take place on 30 August 2014 at the International Convention Centre (CSIR) in the city of Tshwane, Pretoria.

“For me this is all about how to to love, inspire and make a difference. We are celebrating 20 years of empowerment and remembering milestones of a progressive journey whilst empowering women by giving them a platform, information and tools to help them achieve success in their lives,” said Joan Madibeng.

Tickets for the 4th Annual Women, The Real Architects of Society Event cost R600.00 which includes lunch and a great goodie bag. To join Joan Madibeng and her hand picked expert guest speakers at the event, purchase tickets by e-mailing info@realarchitects.co.za or calling 0105912867.

Last month’s Come Wine With Us was a completely unique take on their usual food and wine pairings.  The idea behind the experience was a cultural exchange – meeting new people, discussing life and swapping ideas. The day started off bright and early at Cape Town’s train station where we boarded our own private train to Khayelitsha.

IMG_20140531_105932 IMG_20140531_100039

Once off the train we jumped in the minibus taxis that were waiting for us and headed off to our first stop: the Football of Hope Centre. An area notorious for gang and related violent crime activity, it was reclaimed  as part of a World Cup 2010 initiative, equiped with football facilities and comfortable seating areas, it has successfully made the transition and become a place for locals to meet and hang out.

Just around the corner is the exciting entrepreneurship spot: The Hubspace. Part of a growing trend of co-working spaces in Cape Town, the Hubspace provides a work environment for small tech-based startups.

IMG_20140531_111834

And then it was off to Malibongwe Restaurant for traditional food paired with Nederburg wines. We had a great time chatting with the wine makers, tasting some new wines and hearing a bit more about some of what we can expect next from Nederberg.

Then back to the train for the short trip back to Cape Town!

Book for the next CWWU, I’ve heard from some reliable sources that it’s one you don’t want to miss!
Thanks to the CWWU team for hosting us, it was a memorable day!

Everyone loves delicious food, and when paired with a little bit of mystery, it’s the perfect match. The Secret Eats provides the perfect forum for meeting people, exploring interesting food pairings and enjoying an innovative experience in our creative fun city!

The original concept behind Secret Eats:

Welcome to the table. This is no ordinary dinner party – SecretEATS is your portal to the best venues, hosts, chefs and incredible people you’ll see in one sitting. Ever.

For starters, sign up. It’s free

The process is simpler than beans on toast. Sign up to receive your invitation or email us eat@thesecreteats.com.  When our next dinner date is confirmed, we’ll send out the invitations and await your booking.  All experiences are prepaid ahead of the event and the price will vary based on the event, the chef and the venue.

Not too sure where you’re going? Don’t stress

We’ll let you know exactly where you’re off to just ahead of the dinner event. And, of course, we’ll give you plenty of time to get home and change. So while you’re enjoying your slightly soggy cheese and tomato sandwich over lunch, you’ll get a text or email from us telling you just when and where your delicious dinner adventure will start.

The menu speaks for itself, every course was delicious, the pairings were perfect and the surprise tequila “course” was the cherry on the top. Also, anyone who knows me, knows that churros are my drug of choice (that and tea), so to end the meal on the spectacular high of chocolate and churros made me very happy.

The theme for the evening was Cinqo De Mayo, based on the traditional celebration of the Battle of Puebla in Mexico. Hosted at the stylish multi-faced The Office venue, it was a celebration of all that is great about Mexican food creatively channeled to create elegant, delicious fare.

Keep an eye out for their next event, or request an invitation on the Secret Eats website to find out about what will be happening next month!

Thanks Greg and the Office for hosting Alex and I – we had a fun evening!

This week’s Tuesday is one of my favourite’s in recent memory, largely thanks to the lovely media brunch at Mondiall that I was lucky enough to be invited to. Mondiall is one of my favourites at the Waterfront and everyone that I’ve recommended them to have raved about their experience there. The restaurant is overseen by Peter Tempelhoff and headed up by Chef Oliver Cattermole. They offer exquisite food at prices that are comparable to most places in Cape Town. But, crucially, their offering is streets ahead in terms of quality and presentation. And the fact that they have one of the best views in Cape Town doesn’t hurt either.

IMG_20140515_183740Before we got started with the main business of brunch, we tasted a selection of pastries of which the cinnamon swirl was the clear favourite! Then brunch. I chose the Eggs Norwegian, but all the other choices looked equally delicious, although the most interesting was the Omlette Arnold Bennet which includes haddock, gruyère, hollandaise sauce and chives.

While we chatted and feasted we were approached with the all-important question: “Anything for Dessert?” and luckily I was sitting at the end of the table with the people who like to eat. So, naturally, the answer was yes and we worked our way through the Maple & Pecan Pie, the Mondiall Chocolate Sundae and the Cape Malva Pudding, all beautifully presented and all decadently delicious!

Side Note: Mondiall is running a lovely lunch special at the moment, either their Wagyu Burger with CBC craft beer (R95) or Fish & Chips with a glass of wine (R95).
