I can’t stop recommending the Food and Wine Club Come Wine With Us. For so many reasons it’s the best foodie meet-up in Cape Town (and now Johannesburg). Firstly, the hosts are lovely people, Sybil and Peet are fun, creative, professional, and have a whole-hearted commitment to showing their guests a good time. Secondly, the members are a diverse, interesting group of people that are open to meeting new people, enthusiastic about new experiences and come with very little of the snobbery that one often experiences in Cape Town. Thirdly, the environment for the events is carefully crafted to entertain, encourage mingling, expose members to new experiences and, through much wine, provide a platform for free conversation.

The first event of 2014 was a highlight for me – hosted by Laborie we were taken for a tour of the farm (including a visit to the Anglo-Boer Monument)  introduced to the Manor House over bubbly, treated to an amazing chocolate and wine pairing, and rounded off with lunch prepared by the Harvest restaurant.

The Chocolate Pairing

The pairings were beautiful, creative and intelligent – my favourite pairing was the Cabernet Savignon paired with the dark malted cherry chocolate. My surprise favourite of the wines was their Pineau de Laborie, it’s rich, not overly sweet, with delicious cherry and chocolate notes. I don’t usually drink fortified wines, but this is spectacular.

Lunch at the Harvest Restaurant

Harvest 5

And then on to lunch at the Harvest restaurant where chef Matthew Gordon had prepared a harvest feast! Dishes included marinated mussels, truffle salad, beautiful charcuterie platters and to end the meal, cheese platters with fruit. My surprise pick of the lunch was the smoked chicken; it was tender, juicy and perfectly smoked. It was followed closely by the berry compote that accompanied the cheese platter.

And, with our appetites sated and glasses topped up, we proceeded to the all-important matter of boules with much laughing and some terrible throwing.

All to soon we were bundled back onto the bus, back to Cape Town for a well-deserved afternoon rest!
