The Stack is that place that I’m recommending to anyone and everyone that will listen. There’s a reason that you have to book a couple of days in advance and that they were the winners of EatOut 2017 Best Bistro Eastery in the Western Cape. It really is that good.
I’ll get into more detail about what we ate shortly but before I continue, for the record, I don’t think I’ve ever had such a flawless experience. And it’s not because I’m a blogger and get special treatment – they didn’t know I was there for a review. And yet every detail of our three course meal was perfect.
“We love proper food. No smears, no soils, no spumas, froths or strangled ingredients. The Brasserie is authentic, hearty, good and true French. Your go-to local for consistently magnificent fare”
The outside area is stunning – it’s peaceful, full of beautiful plants and makes a welcome respite from the bustle of the city. We sat outside and chose a perfectly chilled bottle of Chardonnay from Dorrance – and were pleasantly surprised by this gem. Dorrance is an urban winery based in Cape Town (and it’s now on our list of places to explore in our city!)
We chose the Gnocchi and the Tuna Niçoise. Both were plated beautifully, both were delicious, and I would order either of them again without hesitating!
This is always a difficult choice. With ordering read meat you always run the risk of overdone, tough meals that either have to be sent back or you just suck it up and chew your way through it. Not at the Stack. We ordered the Steak Frites (medium-rare sirloin) and the Springbok Loin which the waiter recommended be served medium rare.
There are a couple of great options to choose from. We opted for the Macarons and the Chocolate mousse, both French-style, neither too sweet, both worth going back for! For dessert we relocated back to the terrace to enjoy the warm evening and the garden.
Where is the Stack?
It’s in a beautiful building (Leinster Hall) set in a lush garden in Gardens. They have a stylish upstairs bar, the brasserie downstairs, the terrace area, a members bar and meeting rooms.

** We were invited to the Stack for dinner, all views and images are my own (with the exception of two images from the Stack where the lighting made it a bit difficult to decent pictures)
