Banele Desai

Banele was born on the 8th October 2004. Other than his date of birth, there is no other birth history for him.

He was born HIV-positive to a single mother suffering from an alcohol addiction. At 5 months he was left abandoned at the Somerset Hospital in Cape Town. He was treated for tuberculosis and pneumonia over a period of months. After this he was moved to palliative care. After a short Read More spell there, he was moved to the Fikelela Children’s Home in Khayelitsha. 

On 15 December, 2005, a corporate visit by a large insurance company, was going to change Banele’s life forever. On this day, he was going to meet his adoptive mother, Fatima Desai, a single Mom of a teen son who was doing her MBA part-time at that time.

Two years later, Banele moved to the leafy suburbs of the Cape where he had been legally fostered. His adoption was registered in 2013.

Due to the HIV and FAS, Banele lives with intellectual disabilities and mental health issues,  His physical health requires that he receives specialized treatment from multiple medical experts. He attended a school for learners with special needs but a homeschooling environment was considered to be better for his development. Despite the limitations, he aspires to creating opportunities for his own personal growth.
